Frankincense distillation is a traditional method used to extract essential oil from the resin of frankincense trees, including Boswellia sacra, Boswellia carteri, and Boswellia frereana. This resin, commonly known as olibanum, is obtained by making incisions in the bark of the tree, leading to the secretion of resin that forms into teardrop-shaped droplets upon solidification. These resin droplets are then subjected to the distillation process, where they are heated to release the aromatic compounds and transform into potent essential oil.
During the distillation process, the resin droplets are carefully heated in a still, allowing the volatile compounds to vaporize and condense into a liquid form. This liquid, known as frankincense essential oil, contains the concentrated aromatic essence of the resin and is prized for its therapeutic properties. The distillation process ensures that the essential oil retains its purity and potency, capturing the full spectrum of beneficial compounds present in the resin.
